HISTORY

Subspecialty Society of:

In 1975, the Philippine Association of Spine Surgeons (PASS) was established in order to organize interested orthopedic and neurosurgeons.  Becoming a member of this prestigious group, however, was by invitation only, thus limiting membership and hindering growth leading to gradual inactivity until the eventual dissolution of the association.

In 1995, some members of the defunct PASS and others with a special interest in the field of spinal surgery saw the need for an appropriate educational setting that will maintain the highest level of professional standards in the practice of the specialty.  The need witnessed the birth of the Philippine Spine Society (PSS).  Its objectives were:
   -  to serve as a medium for the exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences among its members
   -  to foster harmonious relationships and camaraderie among members
   -  to enhance the knowledge and surgical skills of all spine surgeons through scientific activities, for
       the benefit of patients
   -  to promote the advancement of spinal surgery in the country

This time, the primary considerations for membership in the society are special interest and active participation in the activities of the society.  The Board has imposed that aspiring members should be Fellows of the Philippine Orthopaedic Association (POA), Philippine Neurosurgical Society (PNS), or the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) and have undergone fellowship training of at least 6 months in spine surgery as minimum requirements for membership to the society.

The Philippine Spine Society, a subspecialty society of the Philippine Orthopaedic Association, aims to provide venues for interaction and discussion of human spinal column conditions and diseases for the purpose of continuing medical education.  As the premier advocate for spine care in the country, it is also involved in efforts to promote and provide proper spine management to patients.
